LVMH (Louis Vuitton group) is launching its call for applications for its 5th Métiers d’Art artist residency program at the Heng Long Leather factory in Singapore for the period of January to June 2020.
Recognized as the worldwide reference in crocodile skins tanning, Heng Long Leather is a family business created in 1950 and still managed by the founder’s grandsons. The factory was acquired by LVMH in 2011.
The Residency
Heng Long Leather tannery will welcome a young artist (less than 40 y/o) for a period of approximately 6 months within its production site where a workshop will be made available. The craftsmen of the factory will dedicate some of their time to help the artist when needed and the production cost of the works (materials) will be supported by the place of production and/or LVMH Métiers d’Art.
At the end of the Residency, some of the artist’s works will enter the LVMH Métiers d’Art Collection (typically 5), a book will be published by the French publisher RVB Books, to be distributed in contemporary art bookstores, and an exhibition of the works might be organized in a partner art gallery.
Objectives of the Residency:
1. Art: Creation of 15 to 30 pieces of art, using the raw material of the factory and realized with the help of the craftsmen and the resources of the factory.
2. Creativity: Unleash creative potential in craftsmen’s minds.
3. Technical innovation: Joint creativity can lead to some new techniques that can directly benefit to the factory and the Maisons.
4. Communication: Through several tools such as social media, book, exhibition, etc.
Deadline for applications: July 15, 2019

About LVMH Métiers d’Art:
LVMH Métiers d’art‘s core mission is to protect and develop the access to raw materials & know-how required by the LVMH Fashion & Leather Goods Maisons. In this perspective, LVMH Métiers d’Art encourages and creates all initiatives to develop innovation, enrich know-how and stimulate creation with the LVMH Group key suppliers. One of them is an annual artist residency program.
Launched in 2016, the yearly LVMH Métiers d’Art artist residency program brings together young artists (less than 40 y/o) and producers of different materials recognized for their unique quality, with the aim of creating original works of art.
The residencies are compelling two-way processes since they simultaneously stimulate creativity and innovation by the artisans who engage with the artist’s vision.
“At heart, the LVMH Métiers d’Art Residency is a bet: we provoke an encounter between artist and artisan, or, more exactly, invite the artist to the artisan’s home. As a foregone conclusion, artist and artisan will tame, understand, and surprise one another until, finally, working together, they enable something completely unexpected to take place.”
(Jean Baptiste Voisin, Chief Strategy Officer for the LVMH Group and President of LVMH Métiers d’Art)
