Singapore animated films travel to Cannes and Annecy!

All attention is now on Singaporean talents who have been nominated at Cannes Festival and Annecy International Animation Film Festival!

The short film “PIECE OF MEAT” directed by Huang Junxiang & Jerrold Chong, (a Finding Pictures Production) and based on a short story by Eric Khoo has been officially selected for the prestigious Director’s Fortnight at the upcoming Cannes Festival.

The Directors’ Fortnight or Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, is an independent section held in parallel to the Cannes Film Festival. Singaporean films that have screened at the prestigious category are Eric Khoo’s Be With Me (2005), Ho Tzu Nyen’s Here (2009) and Anthony Chen’s llo llo (2013). The Directors’ Fortnight is distinguished from other Cannes categories by its non-competitive nature, appreciation for individualistic directorial styles and independent filmmaking. Cinematic expressions of all forms from short films, documentaries to fictional narratives have been screened at Director’s Fortnight.

Annecy International Animation Film Festival has also recently announced the first short film competition lineups for its 2019 edition, which runs from June 10 – 15.

A total of 80 films were announced and amongst them, “PIECE OF MEAT”, this time for the Perspective Short Films in the Competition category.

It is also exciting to mention that earlier last month, the same group of producers (Jerrold Chong and Mark Wee) participated at the first Animation du Monde Workshop in Manilla, organized by the Annecy Festival with the support of the Embassy of France in Singapore. Their adaptation of Sonny Liew’s 2015 graphic novel “The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye” was selected by the Jury committee among the 6 Southeast Asian projects presented. As such, all the more to support this group of creative and promising young talents who now have two strong projects to pitch to international co-producers and investors at Annecy Festival this June!
