Diverse oneness by Lavender Chang

Homage to Alliance Française’ members

Alliance Française de Singapour has commissioned the rising star photographer Lavender Chang to celebrate its 70th anniversary by taking 70 portraits of its past and present members to pay tribute to the diversity of the Alliance Française community.

“A person’s living environment and the presence of a person in his or her living environment reveal the essence of the person. I believe one’s existence is not just formed by his or her physical existence. The world is made up numerous interlinked universes, in constant flux. Every living and non-living thing represents a universe and eventually forms who we are.

To celebrate the diversity of the members of the Alliance Française, I captured their portraits in their homes, showing them at their most natural state without pretence. Some of the key elements in my art practice are capturing the duration of time and the indeterminacy of the creation process into one image. I explored the unexpected and unique elements of each person by capturing them with a long exposure shot like a light painting at night.” Lavender Chang
