The Sacred Voices of Corsica, by Spartimu

Spartimu is dedicated to preserving and sharing Corsica’s traditional polyphonic singing, rooted in the oral tradition of cantu in paghjella — a practice recognized by UNESCO as a form of intangible cultural heritage.

Paghjella songs are most commonly found in churches during mass, but are also found in festive or social occasions, performed at village squares and bars. The texts, often in Corsican, Sardinian, Latin and Greek, contain themes that resonate strongly with the islanders: of love, exile, identity and politics.

Spartimu’s work not only revitalizes this ancient art but also extends to repertoires from across the Mediterranean sea. By weaving together diverse musical traditions, Spartimu creates unique encounters that highlight both contrast and harmony, a hallmark of their artistry.
