Dahomey (2024) is a landmark documentary co-produced by France, Senegal, and Benin that explores the legacy of empire and cultural restitution in the 21st century.
The film follows the historic 2021 return of 26 royal treasures from France to Benin, blending vérité-style filmmaking with spiritual and contemporary reflections on colonial plunder, memory, and identity.
Dahomey was awarded the Golden Bear at the 2024 Berlinale, the festival’s highest honor. This historic win made Franco-Senegalese filmmaker Mati Diop the first African woman to ever receive this prestigious top prize.
Singapore audiences will have a rare opportunity to see the film during its one and only screening, presented as part of the Perspectives Film Festival (PFF). Organised by undergraduates from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the festival will run from 24 to 26 October 2025 at Oldham Theatre.
This year’s edition of PFF explores the theme “Tradition and Modernity”, offering a curated line-up of international films that examine the complex interplay between the past and present. The programme includes strong entries from France, Japan, China, and more.
