A PICTORIAL JOURNEY OF SURREALISM ACROSS CULTURES
Internationally acclaimed Cuban painter Wifredo Lam (1902–1982) is celebrated for blending Afro-Cuban symbolism with Western modernism in a unique cross-cultural approach. Amidst the social and political turmoil of the Spanish Civil War and World War II, Lam’s encounters with key artists, writers, and art movements shaped his artistic vision. His time in Paris and Marseille, where he met figures like Picasso and André Breton, exposed him to Surrealism and other transformative influences.
STPI’s Annual Special Exhibition this year highlights printmaking, a rare opportunity to encounter this central aspect of his practice. Often collaborating with intellectuals and writers like René Char and Aimé Césaire, he created livres d’artiste – artist books that combined visual and literary expression, capturing the critical and revolutionary spirit of their time.

Join us for a journey through poetry, music and movement inspired by pantoum and Surrealism. Switch is like a living poem where each performer whispers from traditions, languages and influences to create an archipelagic soundscape. This performance is produced by Le Pavillon Rouge des Arts Hong Kong, and supported by the French Embassy of Singapore and STPI.
