Manu Chao’s debut performance in Singapore with Tropika, the conscious interdisciplinary initiative for his album tour, ‘Sibérie m’était contéee’. Supported by the Embassy of France in Singapore, the music event will take place on Saturday, April 04, 2020 at FOC Sentosa. Known for combining several languages and musical styles, Sibérie m’était contéee was the first French language-only album released by Manu Chao in 2004. It is the conflation between city, lover and the seasons poetically handled over 23 playful cameos, making an engaging French lesson. The flourishes of chanson alongside minimalist rock-reggae is a tribute to Paris, where Chao grew up. His song “La Vida Tómbola” was featured in the documentary film Maradona by Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica and “Clandestino” won the Best World Music Album award in 1999’s Victoires de la Musique.
Till today, Manu Chao remains one of the most elusive stars to be seen busking in a local bar or playing at squats as often as any high profile gigs. “It’s not only travelling for the sake of it. I travel to meet people. For a long time now, and maybe even more for the past years, I’ve been listening to cultures. Wherever I go, I’m interested in what people listen to, in what they sing and eat, in how they live and party, in their joys and sorrows.” said Manu Chao. Performing alongside Chao will be Singapore-based global music collectives, Sonido Singapura and Beatroot. Chao shares the ethos as Tropika, who believes that regardless of language, location, race and religion, everybody should be entitled equal access to health, wellbeing and opportunity.
