ECHOES, EMBERS: A STORY OF VIETNAMESE AND FRENCH CINEMA
The programme, presented as part of AFA’s salon series REFRAME, is curated by Trương Quế Chi and Trần Duy Hưng. The selection dissects the multiple aspects of France’s complicated presence in Vietnam at various moments in time – though not seeking to present a timeline of events and milestones – while also exploring the way Vietnamese cinema has interpreted and localised French aesthetical influences. Across a portrayed timespan of more than a century are narratives of historical interventions, political contestation, heritage, diasporic return and contemporary renewal. At the same time on a visceral level, traces of Marker, Rouch, Carax and others can be felt in places sometimes unexpected.
ECHOES, EMBERS: A story of Vietnamese and French cinema will run from 11 – 26 November 2022 at Oldham Theatre. There will be an in-person panel discussion as well.
