A CONVERSATION WITH MARC NAIR AND TSEN-WAYE TAY

The Flâneur and the City is a webinar-conversation with two Singaporean artists, Marc Nair and Tsen-Waye Tay, featured in a recent exhibition titled “Sightlines” presented at Alliance Française de Singapour. It will highlight the influence of French writers and artists in the poems and photographs showcased in “Sightlines”.

The figure of Baudelaire’s flâneur as a roving wanderer and careful observer of everyday life has been a source of inspiration for many people over the years. The streets of French cities become a rich landscape for the artists. The photographs shot on monochrome film by Tsen-Waye contain a wealth of emotion which opens an avenue for an ekphrastic response from Marc, whose poems contain traces of Appolinaire’s Calligrammes but aspire as well towards a textual representation of Barthes’ notion of the studium and the punctum.
